What is IAS Exam?

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Civil Services exam to recruit candidates for the three All India Services and Central Civil Services for various departments of the Government of India. The Civil Services Exam is commonly called as the IAS Exam. IAS notification 2020 will start the IAS exam process officially. Eligibility Criteria for IAS, IRS, IFS & Other Services 

Educational Qualification

• Applicants must have complete Graduate from recognized university.
• Check Advertisement for educational qualification.

Age Limit

Candidates must be minimum 21 years and maximum 32 years of age as on August 1, 2020. This means that candidates must have born not earlier than August 2, 1988 and not later than August 1, 1999.

There is also age relaxation of some years for reserved category candidates:

Exam Process

IAS exam is conducted in two stages – Preliminary (objective-type paper) and Mains (descriptive paper and interview). UPSC IAS Preliminary paper is conducted to select candidates for the Main(written) exam. IAS Prelims is just a screening exam and its marks are not considered for the final merit.

UPSC Civil Services Main Exam, as the name suggests, is the main stage of the IAS Exam Process. The marks of the IAS Main exam is taken into consideration for the IAS Final Result. The final merit list for the UPSC Civil Services Exam provides a rank to the candidates. Based on these ranks, Services are allotted to the candidates.

Stage I: IAS Exam – UPSC Prelims

• The questions in the IAS Exam (Prelims) are of the objective type or Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
• There is ‘Negative Marking’ in the IAS Exam for each incorrect answer but only in the Prelims stage. The negative marking for incorrect answers will be 1/3rd (0.66) of the allotted marks of that question.
• The GS Paper II (CSAT) in IAS exam is of qualifying nature and candidates should score a minimum of 33 per cent in this paper to qualify to the next stage of the IAS exam i.e. the Mains.
• Blind candidates are given an extra time of 20 minutes for each paper in the IAS Exam (Prelims).
• It is mandatory for the candidates to appear in both the papers of civil services prelims exam for the evaluation.
• The marks scored by the candidates in the preliminary examination are not counted for the final score. It is only a screening test where candidates not securing the cut-off marks are eliminated.

IAS Mains Exam

IAS Main Exam 2020 will commence from September 18. Candidates need to appear for IAS Mains Exam as per the details mentioned on the admit card. IAS Mains exam consists of a total of nine descriptive papers. Out of the Nine, two papers are of qualifying in nature. These IAS Question papers are of General English and General Language paper. There are Four General Studies papers, One Essay Paper and two optional Subject paper. The marks of each paper are assigned as follows.

The number of candidates in the IAS Main Exam is just 15 to 18 times the number of vacancies notified in the official notification. Since the number of candidates is far less in the IAS Main exam hence the number of centres are also less. The IAS Main Exam Centres are given below:

Note: The official website informs that allotment of centres (for both Preliminary and Mains) will be on first-apply-first allot basis. Once the capacity of a particular centre is attained, the same will be frozen and applicants will have to choose a centre from the remaining options. Applicants are, therefore, advised to apply early so that they can get an exam centre of their choice.

UPSC Syllabus: Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2020

UPSC releases detail syllabus for Civil Services Examination in its official notification every year. Here is the syllabus for both Prelims and Main Exam. 

Syllabus For Prelims Exam

The prelims exam is qualifying in nature and has 2 papers in total: GS and CSAT. In CSAT, an aspirant has to score just 33% marks while in GS, an aspirant has to score atleast upto the cut-off marks. The nature of both Paper 1 and 2 is objective and for every wrong attempts, marks are deducted.

Paper I: GS (General Studies)

Total Marks: 200  

Duration: 2 Hours

Nature: Objective (MCQ)

• Current events of national and international importance.
• History of India and Indian National Movement.
• Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
• Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
• Economic and Social Development-Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
• General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization.
• General Science.

Paper II: CSAT (Aptitude Test)

Total Marks: 200

Duration : Two hours

Nature: 2 Hours

• Comprehension;
• Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
• Logical reasoning and analytical ability;
• Decision making and problem solving;
• General mental ability;
• Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. — Class X level)

Note 3: It is mandatory for the candidate to appear in both the Papers of Civil Services (Prelim) Examination for evaluation. It is also necessary to qualifying both the papers in order to get into the Main Phase of the Exam.

Main exam has 9 subjective papers in total, out of which 2 are qualifying in nature and the other forms the part of merit list. Here is the detail syllabus fir the same.

This paper requires a comprehensive understanding on multiple topics. Effective and exact expression will be given credit. 

Paper II (General Studies-I): Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society

Marks: 250

1. Indian culture will cover the salient aspects of Art Forms, literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times.
2. Modern Indian history from about the middle of the eighteenth century until the presentsignificant events, personalities, issues.
3. The Freedom Struggle — its various stages and important contributors/contributions from different parts of the country.
4. Post-independence consolidation and reorganization within the country.
5. History of the world will include events from 18th century such as industrial revolution, world wars, redrawal of national boundaries, colonization, decolonization, political philosophies like communism, capitalism, socialism etc.— their forms and effect on the society.
6. Salient features of Indian Society, Diversity of India.
7. Role of women and women’s organization, population and associated issues, poverty and developmental issues, urbanization, their problems and their remedies.
8. Effects of globalization on Indian society.
9. Social empowerment, communalism, regionalism & secularism.
10. Salient features of world’s physical geography.

PAPER-III (General Studies- II): Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations.

2. Functions and responsibilities of the Union and the States, issues and challenges pertaining to the federal structure, devolution of powers and finances up to local levels and challenges therein.

4. Comparison of the Indian constitutional scheme with that of other countries.
   Parliament and State legislatures—structure, functioning, conduct of business, powers & privileges and issues arising out of these.

7. Contributions of moral thinkers and philosophers from India and world.
